Mercyhurst alumna, Mary Ellen Leisering ’06, is paving her own road to success as the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at Houston Baptist University. This is Mary Ellen’s sixth year as Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at HBU. She is the primary contact at HBU for men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s basketball, and softball.
A native of Erie, Pa., Leisering is a 2006 graduate of Mercyhurst, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sport Media. While at Mercyhurst, she was a four-year student assistant in the Sports Information office, assisting in all aspects of Laker sports. She has sports information in her blood. Her father, John Leisering ’81, is the former Sports Information Director at Mercyhurst, and her brother, David Leisering ’01, is the current Sports Information Director at the ‘Hurst.
Mary Ellen went to Houston after a 10-month internship at Wayne State University in Detroit, where she was responsible for the Division I women’s ice hockey program, as well as Division II men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s tennis. After her time at Mercyhurst, Leisering served as the public relations intern for College Hockey America (CHA), where she was responsible for the weekly press releases and conference players of the week. She designed the WSU women’s hockey and the CHA men’s and women’s media guides and was also the acting commissioner at the 2007 CHA Women’s Hockey Tournament in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Mary Ellen is currently working on her Masters Degree in Liberal Arts while at Houston Baptist University, and she plans to graduate in December of 2014.
