Athletics Hall of Fame 2017

ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst University inducted nine members into its Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 10. The new honorees are listed below.

Tony DeMeo
Head Football Coach, 1981-1987

  • First head coach in Mercyhurst football program history
  • EIAA Coach of the Year, 1985
  • Compiled 41-21-2 all-time record
  • Coached Lakers to first win in program history – a 28-0 victory – over St. John Fisher on Sept. 5, 1981

Joshua Helm
Men’s Basketball, 2000-04

  • All-GLIAC South First Team, 2003-04
  • All-GLIAC South Second Team, 2001-02, 2002-03
  • Ranks fourth all-time in career points (1,613) and rebounds (764)
  • Ranks third in made free throws (303), fourth in field goals (645), ninth in field-goal percentage (.547), 10th in points per game (16.5) and 15th in blocks (57)
  • As a senior, led team in scoring (19.0), rebounds (8.5), field-goal percentage (.546) and total blocks (23)
  • As a junior, led team in scoring (18.0), rebounding (8.3) and field-goal percentage (.572)
  • As a sophomore, led team in scoring (15.6) and rebounding (7.6)

Tim Latimer
Football, 1981-84

  • Member of inaugural Mercyhurst football team
  • Ranks seventh all-time with 313 career tackles
  • Ranks second all-time with 260 assisted tackles
  • Tied for 19th in career interceptions (7)
  • Led Lakers in tackles in 1982 with the eighth-highest total in program history (111)

Amy (Plumley) Lacey-Plumley
Women’s Lacrosse, 2000-03

  • IWLCA All-America First Team, 2002
  • IWLCA All-America Second Team, 2001
  • Played 60 games, finishing with 106 goals, 15 assists, 106 groundballs, 92 caused turnovers and 29 draw controls
  • As a junior, led team in groundballs (43) and caused turnovers (37)
  • As a sophomore, led team in goals (41), groundballs (40) and caused turnovers (31)

Danielle (Poole) Piser
Field Hockey, 1999-02

  • Women’s Lacrosse, 2000-03
  • IWLCA All-America First Team, 2002
  • IWLCA Academic Honor Roll, 2002
  • NFHCA National Academic Squad, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002
  • Key defender for both teams
  • Played 65 games for Mercyhurst field hockey and totaled two goals, one assist and 29 defensive saves
  • Played 60 games for Mercyhurst women’s lacrosse, finishing with four assists, 68 groundballs, 51 caused turnovers and 10 draw controls

 
Josh Shields
Wrestling, 2007-11

  • NCAA Division II champion at 165-pound weight class, 2009
  • All-American, 2008, 2009, 2010
  • Super Region One champion, 2009, 2010
  • NCAA finalist, 2009, 2010
  • NCAA regional finalist, 2008, 2009, 2010
  • NWCA All-Academic First Team, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011
  • Compiled 106-22 record for second-highest winning percentage in program history (.828)
  • Competed in two different weight classes at Nationals: 174 in 2008 and 165 in 2009 and 2010

Martin Sturgess
Men’s Tennis, 1973-76

  • Co-captain of 1976 NAIA national championship team
  • NAIA doubles champion, 1976
  • NAIA singles quarterfinalist, 1976
  • NAIA singles semifinalist, 1975
  • NAIA All-American, 1975 singles, 1976 singles, 1976 doubles
  • Pennsylvania State College Champion, 1973, 1974, 1975
  • NAIA District 18 champion, 1973, 1974, 1975

Keith Swanson
Football, 1994-98

  • Don Hansen All-America First Team, 1997
  • All-MIFC Second Team, 1998
  • Ranked 11th all-time in career tackles-for-loss (31)
  • Ranked 19th all-time in total tackles (242)
  • Tied for 31st all-time in career sacks (7)
  • Was second on team in tackles in both 1997 and 1998

 
Christie (Turak) Foster
Women’s Cross Country, 2007-09

  • USTFCCCA All-American, 2009
  • All-Region First Team, 2008 East, 2009 Atlantic
  • All-PSAC First Team, 2008, 2009
  • School record-holder in 5K with course-best 17:32 at Carnegie Mellon (Oct. 10, 2009)
  • School record-holder in 6K with 20:58 during NCAA Atlantic Regional at Mansfield (Nov. 7, 2009)
  • NCAA Scholar-Athlete, 2009
  • Academic All-Region, 2008 East, 2009 Atlantic
  • Won eight races as an individual during collegiate career (three in 2008, five in 2009)
  • Placed second at prestigious National Catholic Invitational at Notre Dame (Ind.), 2009
