How has your faith provided happiness for you?
By Lori Kaveney
How many times have you heard someone say, “I’ll be happy when……..”? Yet how many times have you equally heard “those were the good old days”? It seems that the moments we often wish away for happier days are many times the same ones that are reflected upon later with fond memories. It’s really a matter of perspective.
I remember a time in my life when I, too, waited for happiness. I thought surely I would be happy when the right person, place or thing came along. As I’ve grown in my relationship with the God of my understanding, I have come to believe that each moment is a gift that offers the choice to be happy. It is easier to accept unpleasant times when broken down into living one moment at a time.
My faith in God has taught me to believe nothing happens in my world by mistake. When I take the time to thank Him for all that is, I become more aware of the many gifts and blessings that are already mine to enjoy. I thank God often for that which is in my life at any given time; I know I will be a different person in the next moment for having fully lived through the previous one. It is only by living in the moment that I have found the grace to breathe deeply, love intimately, face fear or forgive another. All these are precious, priceless gifts. In choosing to live this way I have found true peace and contentment, both by-products of faith and happiness.
At this time of year it can be especially challenging to stay in the moment. I pray that you take the time to become more aware of this moment. It is truly the only one you have.
