Gifts That Pay You Income

Charitable remainder trusts are gift arrangements that allow you to make an irrevocable gift to Mercyhurst in exchange for an annual income for your lifetime and/or the lifetime of others or a term of years. The amount you receive annually is based upon being either a variable or fixed trust as well as the age of the donor and the amount of the gift.

Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT)

  • You transfer cash, appreciated stock or securities or other appreciated assets, including real estate into a trust. Our minimum for this type of gift is $100,000.
  • The trust pays a percentage of the value of its principal, which is valued each year, to the named beneficiary(ies). The variable payments help to take inflation into account.
  • When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to Mercyhurst to be used as you have directed.

The benefits of the CRUT are many, to include:

  • Receive variable income for life or a term of years in return for your gift.
  • Receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of your contribution.
  • Pay no up front capital gains on appreciated assets you donate.
  • You can make additional gifts to the trust as your circumstances allow for additional income and tax benefits.

Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT)

  • You transfer cash, appreciated stock or securities or other appreciated assets into a trust. Our minimum for this type of gift is $100,000.
  • The trust makes fixed annual payments to the named beneficiary(ies), thus providing steady income.
  • When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to Mercyhurst to be used as you have directed.

There are also many benefits of CRATs, to include:

  • Receive a steady, fixed income for life or a term of years in return for your gift.
  • Pay no up front capital gains tax on appreciated assets you donate.
  • Your trust can be for a specific term of years when you need additional income for things such as tuition payments.

Establishing a charitable remainder trust entitles you to membership in the O’Neil Society, the recognition society for those giving to Mercyhurst through their will or other estate-related gifts.
